The April 2000 issue of "The American Editor," the journal of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, features a healthy dose of advice for newsroom leaders who often struggle to comprehend the more visual aspects of their jobs. This special 32-page issue is the result of lots of work by the Design and Presentation Committee of ASNE.
"That's what this special issue of The American Editor is all about," writes ASNE President and longtime friend of visual journalism N. Christian Anderson III, publisher of the Orange County Register, in the intro to the magazine. (His talented staff assisted greatly in producing the publication, full of colorful visual examples.) The goal "was and is to explore how editors can lead their newsrooms in better helping readers understand the information we're trying to provide them."
More than 30 writers, artists and teachers from around the industry were recruited to contribute to this magazine. Not all the contents are available online, but I've taken the liberty of posting two components I was commissioned to write, and a third by my friend Brenda Shoun, of the Register's staff, that I think needs to be spread around the globe!
