Custom Staff Training/Client Portfolio | Marketing | Tips, Articles, Resources | "Design With Reason" Blog | Bio/Contact ![]() WHY REDESIGN? Why indeed? For years, newspapers have redesigned when editors felt their look had gotten stale, or more recently, to meet the aesthetic demands of new presses or narrowed web widths. Now, equally pressing factors are causing publishers to rethink, reimagine and reinvigorate (words I prefer over redesign) their publications. Is the paper as easy to use as possible? Does the paper provide substance and depth for a core readership that is readily apparent and accessible, while equally serving the time-starved reader? And is it moving beyond being a print-focused monopoly to become a jumping-off platform for a host of media? Design and redesign (or rethinking, if you will) can begin to answer these questions. Some newspapers will only change fonts when redesigning (I'm not so interested in those kinds of projects); others will truly make the effort to really "rethink" the way things are done from front to back, from the newsroom to the ad department to online, and to ask, "what's best for the reader?" or "what do we need to do for today's news and advertising consumers?" For answers to questions you may have about what's involved, link here to six important questions about the redesign process, (updated March 2009) including the need for someone who understands the commercial side of your business, and tips on what to look for when seeking outside help.
